BURLINGTON FLATS – Arleigh Fikes, 87, of Burlington Flats, handed away December 20, 2022 in Cooperstown, NY surrounded by his loving household.
Arleigh was born on June 8, 1935 in Utica, NY the son of the late Charles and Cecilia (Lamanque) Fikes. Along with his mother and father, he was predeceased by a brother Frederick Fikes.
Arleigh wore many hats over his lifetime. He was a bus driver for the Edmeston College District for almost 50 years, a Livestock Vendor, former City Supervisor and Justice for the City of Burlington, an worker of DairyLee, owned Fikes Farm Provide in Edmeston, and a pastime farmer elevating horses, beef cattle, goats, and sheep.
He was most captivated with touring the nation along with his household exhibiting Appaloosa horses. To this present day, the custom they began within the mid 1950s, of driving horses within the Burlington Flats Memorial Day Parade has continued. Later they raised, confirmed and took part in parades with Percheron Draft Horses.
In his early years, he participated in rodeos, driving bareback horses and bulls. He was a Director for the Empire Appaloosa Affiliation and the previous President of the New York State Draft Horse Affiliation. Arleigh was additionally a very long time member of the Masons.
